Body contouring includes a range of cosmetic procedures that restore shape and form, particularly to those areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) removes excess skin and fat from the lower and mid abdomen. Generally skin and fat can be removed from the belly button to the pubic hair line. The underlying abdominal musculature can also be tightened to aid in narrowing the waist line and flattening the abdomen. The scars are hidden as low as possible and run across the pubic hair line to each side of the hips. Recovery usually takes between 4-6 weeks, and requires the use of drains and an abdominal binder. Liposuction (Lipoplasty) is a technique used to literally suction fat from specific areas of the body. Liposuction is best performed on individuals with healthy elastic skin that have pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, such as “love handles”, thighs, neck and abdomen. This is not a technique for large weight loss or the treatment of cellulite. Advances in liposuction techniques and equipment have minimized the risks of immediate complications and shortened recovery time. Gynecomastia or enlargement of the male breasts is a benign condition that affects approximately 40-60% of the male population. This can be quite an embarrassing condition for men and rarely talked about. There are surgical procedures that can make a significant improvement in this condition. Generally gynecomastia is caused by an excess of fat or normal breast tissue, this can happen to one or both breasts. Occasionally the condition can be treated with liposuction alone. However if significant breast tissue is present an incision is made around the areola (pink area around the nipple) and the breast tissue excised surgically, then fine tuned with liposuction. After surgery a compression dressing and occasionally drains are required. As with liposuction the return to full activity normally occurs within weeks. Body contouring to restore ones shape after massive weight loss has been increasing over the last few years. As society becomes more health conscious or as individuals undertake procedures such as “stomach stapling” excessive amounts of weight can be lost, sometimes in the hundreds of pounds. This tends to leave the individual with a significant amount of excess sagging skin in all areas of the body. A revolution in body contouring has evolved with the advancement in new techniques to aid in the correction of excess skin from areas of the body such as the bdomen, breasts, back, arms and legs following massive weight loss.
