  Botox® is the brand name for Botulinum Toxin ‘type a’, that was orginally developed to treat muscle disorders such as eye spasms. More recently it has been marketed for cosmetic use as it was found to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles. Botox® is probably the most popular non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedure in North America today.

  Botox® is a purified form of the bacterium "clostridium botulinum" and is injected into the muscle in low doses. Botox® blocks the release of a chemical called 'acetylcholine' stopping signals for the muscle to contract. It is a very unique product as it actually stops your ability to frown (unlike any other injectable) therefore keeping the skin attached to the muscle smooth.

  Botox® is administered by a plastic surgeon, dermatologist or nurse to reduce lines and wrinkles around the eyes, horizontal and vertical lines on the forehead and can also be injected into the neck. It is injected using a very fine needle and the discomfort is minimal, although after the treatment you may experience a slight headache or get swelling or bruising around the injection site. You may be asked to keep your head elavated for the next 6 hours and not to touch the treated area.

  Effects from Botox® are not immediate and it can take up to two weeks to see the effects. For stubborn or deep wrinkles an additional treatment may need to be performed. In most cases the treatment last for 4 to 6 months, and continued use can prevent new wrinkles from forming.

  Botox® can also be administered to reduce excessive sweating in hands or armpits.

  Botox®, like many non-surgical procedures, does not have to be performed by a plastic surgeon, but care should be taken when choosing a clinic. Some clinics may have estheticians with no medical training at all performing Botox® injections so it is important you carefully choose who to perform your treatment. Many Canadian plastic surgeons have medical aesthetic staff performing Botox® treatments at their clinics.
