Cellulite Reduction in Canada

  Cellulite is a term for the deposits of subcutaneous (beneath or under the skin) fat and fibrous tissue that cause a dimpling orange-peel effect on the skin. Cellulite most commonly occurs on the thighs, hips and legs of women. Alhough diet and exercise may reduce the appearance of cellulite, a large part of cellulite is comprised of toxins and fat within the body. Cellulite can affect men and women of any body weight or size and can be present in women with little body fat. Gender, race, lifestyle, hormones and diet may all conribute to cellulite.

  Cellulite reduction is difficult and many procedures are unproven in effectiveness. Treatments offered include:

Liposuction: Liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of fat from beneath the surface of the skin. It is designed to remove pockets of fat that have not responded to diet or exercise. Liposuction may or may not help reduce cellulite: in reducing overall fat the appearance of cellulite may approve. However it may also make the appearance of cellulite worse.

Endermologie: from the French term meaning 'through the dermis' this treatment uses a machine with a treatment head consisting of two rollers. Between the rollers is a suction chamber. The head is rolled over the skin mobilizing the underlying tissues. The connective tissue walls are gently stretched, which encourages the fibrous tissue cells to produce better quality collagen and elastin, thus toning and firming the area.

Mesotherapy: Mesotherapy is a technique using microinjections to reduce/remove fat. The content of the injections is not regulated or approved by Health Canada for the use of reducing fat, so many plastic surgeons do not perform or promote this procedure.

Accent, Velasmooth : Accent and Velasmooth are new treatments for body contouring and skin tightening using radio frequency, and may help the appearance of cellulite.

  Cellulite reduction, like many non-surgical procedures, does not have to be performed by a plastic surgeon, but care should be taken when choosing a clinic. Many Canadian plastic surgeons have medical aesthetic staff performing cellulite treatments at their clinics.
