Dermabrasion and micro-dermabrasion in Canada
Dermabrasion
is a treatment which
removes the outer layers of your skin unveiling fresh new skin. It is used to reduce wrinkles, lines, blemishes,
uneven skin and in some cases to improve acne, facial scars and to remove pre cancerous growths.
Considered
a surgical procedure Dermabrasion is usually performed in a
surgeon's office. You may be given sedation, local anesthetic and/or a
topical anesthetic. During the treatment a high speed rotating brush or a burr
containing diamond particles is used to sand off layers of damaged skin, with the
surgeon controlling the degree of penetration. After the procedure your skin may
be dressed and you will be swollen and red. The outer layer of the skin will
peel and scab and the fresh skin will appear red then fade. It
is important you avoid the sun and wear protection...not only during your recovery as the
skin is very fragile but permenantly so not to damage the new skin.
Dermaplaning
is a similar procedure where the surgeon uses an instrument called a dermatone that has an oscillating blade. It 'skims' off layers
of skin to make it smooth and as level as the surrounding skin.
A
few important factors to consider before undergoing surgical skin procedures are skin colouring and medical history. Darker complexions and Asian skin
may become permanently discoloured or blotchy. Those prone to allergic rashes
or other skin reactions, or who get frequent fever blisters or cold sores,
may experience a flare-up.
Microdermabrasion is more of a superficial treatment and does not produce
the same effects as Dermabrasion. It exfoliates the outer layer of the skin
and can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, uneven skin tone and dryness.
The Microdermabrasion equipment has
a handheld device that contains aluminum oxide crystals that are sprayed against your skin and debris
is sucked away. This treatment is milder than Dermabrasion or chemical peel
but produces better results than a general facial. Results are subtle but
your skin will look radiant and feel extremely smooth.
Dermabrasion/micro-dermabrasion, like many non-surgical procedures, do not have to be performed by a plastic surgeon, but care should be taken when choosing a clinic as there are risks involved if the treatment is not performed with care. With microdermabrasion there are even spas offering the service,
and although it is not as abrasive as dermabrasion you should still be very
careful at who you choose to perform the treatment. Many Canadian plastic
surgeons have medical aesthetic staff performing dermabrasion/micro-dermabrasion treatments at their clinics.
